Driven to the Edge in Nashville

Last week I had a chance to test out the new 2011 Ford Edge Sport and SEL. I had the time of my life. Ford invited me to check out the new Edge in Tennessee and allowed me to take it on a nearly 100 mile joy ride through the scenic and twisting roads of Tennessee.

Over 400,000 Ford Edges’ have been sold and it is the most popular crossover of its type.

The first model I drove was the sport which comes with AWD, and 22” rims standard, handled beautifully. It drove it during one of the heaviest downpours I ever experienced, and it took every twist and turn as if I were going straight even while driving in the rain. It is definitely one of the most fun cars I have driven.

2011 edgeThe non-sport model which I finished my trip with was still a nice car to drive, however it didn’t have the same oomph that I experienced with the Sport.

The trip to Nashville and the ability to test drive the 2011 Edge, also gave me a chance to check out My Ford Touch. The new version of Ford Sync that now allows you to communicate with over 10,000 voice commands.

With the previous Ford Sync version you were limited to about 100 or so commands. Now, with My Ford Touch the vehicle understands so many more phrases that you no longer need to train yourself to speak in a specific way. You also don’t have to slow your speech down or talk to the car as if it has a hearing problem. Speaking at your normal voice level and speed is fine. I had no problems with the car understanding me.

With the 2011 Edge you will get My Ford Touch standard with GPS. You will get turn by turn navigation directly on your dash next to the speedometer. There is no in car display standard so in order to input an address and get the GPS to guide you on your way, you simply dial into Ford Services and speak in the address or point of interest you are going to. While on the line with Ford Services you can also get the latest news headlines, sports scores and even your horoscope.

If you want visual GPS (maps), you can get that on the Edge as an option it will cost you an additional $795. However with that upgrade the GPS is run on an SD Card which allows you to easily change the maps or update them every year. (Additional cost for SD but ford has yet to announce pricing)

Overall the 2011 Ford Edge is an extremely fun car to drive and the My Ford Touch is a great tool that all drivers should be lucky enough to have. I say head over to your local Ford Dealership and check one out, too!
